Mars‘ Newton Crater
NASA – This image, which combines orbital imagery with 3-D modeling, shows flows that appear in spring and summer on a slope inside Mars’ Newton Crater. Sequences of observations recording the seasonal changes at this site and a few others with similar flows might be evidence of salty liquid water active on Mars today. Evidence for that possible interpretation is presented in a report by McEwen et al. in the Aug. 5, 2011, edition of Science.

This image has been reprojected to show a view of a slope as it would be seen from a helicopter inside the crater, with a synthetic Mars-like sky. The source observation was made May 30, 2011, by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Color has been enhanced. The season was summer at the location, 41.6 degrees south latitude, 202.3 degrees east longitude.

The flow features are narrow (one-half to five yards or meters wide), relatively dark markings on steep (25 to 40 degree) slopes at several southern hemisphere locations. Repeat imaging by HiRISE shows the features appear and incrementally grow during warm seasons and fade in cold seasons. Image Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/Univ. of Arizona

Greek government struggles after bailout bombshell

By Dina Kyriakidou and Harry Papachristou – Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou faced calls from within his own party to step down on Tuesday after he threw the nation’s euro zone membership into jeopardy by calling a referendum on a bailout package agreed only last week.

The leaders of France and Germany scrambled to limit the damage to the wider euro zone, and European politicians expressed incredulity at an announcement that caught everyone by surprise — including Papandreou’s own finance minister. more> http://is.gd/IJh4li

What are we paying members of Congress $285,000 per year for?

The western front of the United States Capitol...

By MacMillin Slobodien and David Williams – The end of the fiscal year has come and gone and yet again Congress has failed to enact any appropriations bills and the country is deeper in debt.

Unlike the private sector, where salaries are earned from willing customers, Congressional salaries and benefits are taken out of the pockets of the struggling taxpayers. And, also unlike the private sector, members of Congress are not paid for performance, as evidenced by the $14.5 trillion debt that they have accumulated over the years. Any manager in any private-sector business would not stay employed for budget overruns like these. more> http://is.gd/dnKylA

Disconnect between U.S. wireless demand and infrastructure capacity

R&D Mag – A new report from the Global Information Industry Center at the University of California, San Diego examines the projected disconnect between U.S. wireless infrastructure capacity and consumer demand.

“We’re currently experiencing a mass migration from wired networks to wireless networks, which under the best of circumstances have far less capacity,” says Michael Kleeman, author of the report and senior fellow at UC San Diego. Wireless is much more convenient than wired connections for many purposes, but “we must understand and accept the trade-offs we will face for the convenience of accessing limited wireless capacity. more> http://is.gd/Vh9WTW
