Rand vs. Rubio

By John Dickerson – The fascination with Sens. Rand Paul and Marco Rubio is understandable. Both are young and ambitious Republicans in a party looking for its next leader. They are charismatic risk-takers who can talk to the media beyond just Fox News.par
par
Simply having a different ideology than the sitting president is generally not enough. Opposition parties always offer a different policy view, but in picking their standard bearer, they have historically decided he should also be made of different stuff. This extra differentiating attribute is one of the reasons moderate candidates have often beaten more liberal or conservative candidates. more> http://tinyurl.com/cggrktv

American Built, Building America

By Michelle Avila – More than a quarter century after hitting its peak, U.S. manufacturing appears to be back. More and more companies from Apple to General Electric, Ford and Caterpillar, are deciding to make their products here.par
par
The first, and some say the biggest issue, has nothing to do with the economics of manufacturing here or there, but with people.par

Hypertherm’e2’80’99s solution was to open its own school to train the workers it desperately needed but couldn’e2’80’99t find. The company partnered with the states of New Hampshire and Vermont, along with Vermont HITEC, a nonprofit organization that had successfully run training programs, to develop an immersion-style education program. The program, in operation for five years now, takes people with a good attitude and aptitude to learn, but not necessarily machining experience, and turns them into the skilled machinists in just nine weeks. more> http://tinyurl.com/ccphhzz

Bitcoin May Be the Global Economy’s Last Safe Haven

By Paul Ford – One of the oddest bits of news to emerge from the economic collapse of Cyprus is a corresponding rise in the value of Bitcoin, the Internet’e2’80’99s favorite, media-friendly, anarchist crypto-currency.par
par
Bitcoin was created in 2009 by a pseudonymous hacker who calls him or herself Satoshi Nakamoto (and who might be several people). It’e2’80’99s a form of virtual cash used to buy goods and services online. Even by Web standards, it’e2’80’99s a strange and supergeeky phenomenon. This is what happens when software and networks meet the concept of currency, when you take peer-to-peer networks and advanced cryptography and ask, ‘e2’80’9cHow can I make a new economy?’e2’80’9dpar

There are 10,952,975 Bitcoins in circulation. (With a digital currency you can be specific.) more> http://tinyurl.com/cv9zn4m

This is no ‘golden age’ of journalism. These are the news media end times

By Bob Garfield – Over at Slate the other day, Matthew Yglesias argued that journalism consumers are enjoying a “golden age”.par
par
The news industry has gone from being obscenely profitable to slightly profitable to ‘e2’80ldblquote at least, in the case of newspapers ‘e2’80ldblquote largely unprofitable. All of that fantastic content Yglesias was gushing about is paid for by venture capitalists making bad bets, established media companies digging into their savings accounts to pay the bills, displaced workers earning peanuts, amateurs, semi-pros, volunteers and monks.par

I would say that the business model is unsustainable, but losing money is not a business model. It is a going-out-of-business model. more> http://tinyurl.com/cllfxg2

Graceful Eruptionpar
NASA – A solar prominence began to bow out and the broke apart in a graceful, floating style in a little less than four hours (Mar. 16, 2013). The sequence was captured in extreme ultraviolet light. A large cloud of the particles appeared to hover further out above the surface before it faded away. Credit: Solar Dynamics Observatory/NASApar
