How Hedge Funds Transfer Wealth From Investors To Managers

The Hedge Fund Mirage, Author: Simon Lack.

By Steve Denning – Once upon a time, hedge funds earned their outsize compensation by, guess what? Hedging their investments.

Today, most hedge funds have morphed into something very different: aggressive, highly-leveraged, speculative vehicles that are desperately chasing returns to outperform their benchmarks, that make huge returns for the managers regardless of the fund’s performance and end up transferring wealth from investors to hedge fund managers.

The fee arrangements are a wealth transference mechanism, systematically moving money from investors to hedge-fund managers. Some of the statistics amassed by Simon Lack’s The Hedge Fund Mirage (2012) are astounding. more> http://tinyurl.com/nzz5e2g

Does Your Storeroom Database Do This?

By Mike Dyson and James Rogers – Years of “thinking lean” led many manufacturers to install systems offering visibility to the flow of direct production parts from suppliers to the assembly line. Very few, however, have had the same discipline or success tracking indirect inventory or maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) data on all the bearings, belts, motors, cleaning supplies, gloves or hair nets required to keep the production line going.

Quite simply, if you can’t be sure about finding the right parts at the right time, you are putting planned maintenance compliance, if not the performance of the whole plant, at risk. Many maintenance technicians address this risk by keeping their own unofficial and potentially unauthorized stores; the practice is so common that many plants have an “amnesty day” when technicians can safely reveal those “private” stashes of parts. more> http://tinyurl.com/q8jaeul

And for good reason. LEDs offer a multitude of advantages. They draw less power than incandescent bulbs, last the life of the vehicle, and illuminate more quickly, providing a safety benefit when used as brake lights. They’re also favored by automotive designers, who like their design flexibility. more> http://tinyurl.com/prlbhk7

Updates from WordPress

Dear WordPress,

By Matt Mullenweg – Has it really been 10 years? It seems just yesterday we were playing around on my blog, and the blogs of a few high school friends.

I’m continually amazed and delighted by how you’ve grown. Your awkward years are behind you. Best of all, through it all, you’ve stuck with the principles that got you started in the first place. You’re always changing but that never changes. You’re unafraid to try new things that may seem wacky or unpopular at first. more> http://tinyurl.com/ol4xltt
