Trump Warns That President Oprah Would Force Americans to Read | The New Yorker

Donald J. Trump issued a stark warning to the nation on Monday that, if elected President, Oprah Winfrey would force Americans to read.

“This is a woman who, every chance she got, told people to join her book club,” Trump told reporters. “If she were President, you better believe that she would make every single American join that book club.”

Trump Administration Says That Nearly 200,000 Salvadorans Must Leave | The New York Times

Nearly 200,000 people from El Salvador who have been allowed to live in the United States for more than a decade must leave the country, government officials announced Monday.

It is the Trump administration’s latest reversal of years of immigration policies and one of the most consequential to date.

Homeland security officials said that they were ending a humanitarian program, known as Temporary Protected Status, for Salvadorans who have been allowed to live and work legally in the United States since a pair of devastating earthquakes struck their country in 2001.

U.S. spy satellite believed destroyed after failing to reach orbit

A U.S. spy satellite that was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, aboard a SpaceX rocket on Sunday failed to reach orbit and is assumed to be a total loss, two U.S. officials briefed on the mission said on Monday.

The classified intelligence satellite, built by Northrop Grumman Corp, failed to separate from the second stage of the Falcon 9 rocket and is assumed to have broken up or plunged into the sea, said the two officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Trump tax law poised to create windfall for states | TheHill

Under the new law, budget analysts say taxpayers who receive a break on their federal forms are actually likely to spend more on their state taxes, unless state legislators act. And that’s setting off contentious fights between those who want to use the money to boost state budgets and those who want to return money to the taxpayers.

“Now we get to do tax reform in all 50 states,” said Nicole Kaeding, an economist at the nonpartisan Tax Foundation.

Huawei’s global ambitions hit by AT&T phone distribution deal’s collapse

AT&T was pressured to drop the deal after members of the U.S. Senate and House intelligence committees sent a letter on Dec. 20 to the Federal Communications Commission citing concerns about Huawei’s plans to launch consumer products through a major U.S. telecom carrier, online tech news site The Information reported.

Fund managers say bitcoin ETF proposals withdrawn due to SEC concern

Staff at the regulatory agency “expressed concerns regarding the liquidity and valuation” of futures contracts based on the digital asset, according to one of the filings.

The move adds a new hurdle to the bid by Wall Street firms to capitalize on investor interest in cryptocurrencies, and it opens a rare public divergence between two financial regulatory agencies over how to regulate them.

Berkshire may get $37 billion book value boost from U.S. tax cuts: Barclays

Book value, a key performance measure for Buffett reflecting assets minus liabilities, probably rose by 12 percent in the final quarter of 2017 because Berkshire can lower its tax bill on investments that have risen in value, Barclays analysts led by Jay Gelb wrote.

That would leave Berkshire valued at about 1.39 times book value, which Gelb called “attractive,” though it would remain above the 1.2 ratio that could prompt Buffett to authorize share repurchases.

Why making the White House a no-phone zone makes sense | FCW

The White House is banning personal mobile phones from West Wing staffers starting Jan. 8. It’s not clear who precisely is subject to the new policy, but according to Press Secretary Sarah Sanders, the shift has been in the works for a while.

A White House ban on personal devices would be by no means unique in the government. The Defense Department, spy agencies and other sensitive locations already maintain policies about where and when personal devices can be used.
